Reference Librarian Full Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Work regularly at the reference desk, providing general information, in-depth research, and computer assistance to the public. Perform professional duties that include managing entire subject areas in the collection and supporting programming efforts. The position is a full-time position at 37.5 hours per week and includes evening and weekend shifts.

REPORTS TO: Head of Reference

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The Reference Librarian starting salary range is $33,000 to $35,000 annually based on qualifications. Benefits include accrued paid time off up to 300 hours annually; 14 paid holidays a year; 6 weeks of paid parental leave; health insurance with HSA; vision and dental insurance; retirement plan with partial employer match; short-term and long-term disability insurance; and opportunities for paid professional development and continuing education.

DUTIES:

  1. Work scheduled shifts each day on the Reference Desk, and answer reference questions by phone, in person, and via online services. Assist patrons with sending faxes, scanning documents and making copies. Operate the cash register, count out the drawer, make change and handle credit card transactions.
  2. Assist patrons searching the online catalog and help patrons locate materials in the physical collection using the Dewey Decimal System. Place holds using the Spark catalog and take interlibrary loan requests, check IDs and print guest passes, reset PIN numbers and renew library cards as needed. Place holds on hotspots, check out and check in hotspots.
  3. Assist patrons with computer questions and provide technology instruction including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, navigate the internet, save documents, create and send attachments and how to print material.
  4. Plan and implement programming for adults in conjunction with the Adult Programming Committee, including coordination of assigned adult programs like Hour with a Librarian.
  5. Select materials for the circulating collection based on an assigned call number designation.
  6. Weed and update the assigned collection as needed.
  7. Collaborate with both internal staff and external partner organizations related to services, resources, and programs.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of how items are shelved in the periodicals department in order to pull microfilm, newspapers and magazines as needed. Retrieve microfilm for patrons and assist them with using the microfilm readers as needed.
  9. Coordinate the answering of obituary requests by searching for and retrieving obituaries on microfilm, collecting payment for obituaries from patrons, storing requests and reporting statistics to the department head.
  10. Scan historically significant materials from the library collections, donated collections and loaned collections. Perform assessments on how to arrange, describe and organize materials. Perform preservation assessments of materials as requested. Create and organize files to be uploaded to PA Photos and Docs using content reader. Create, organize and enter original descriptive metadata for content uploaded to PA Photos and Docs.
  11. Create book displays, exhibits, and bulletin boards for the department on a monthly basis.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s Degree in Library Science
  2. Ability to demonstrate superior customer service
  3. Excellent computer and communication skills
