Tribune and Tribune-Democrat
1853-2019
These obituary indexes were created by Martha Hemminger and other library volunteers, compiled digitally by George Warholic and Jim Wagner, and permission has been given to share them. Permission to download or reproduce them must be given specifically through the library.
Volunteers have gone through the Tribune and, later, the Tribune-Democrat, on microfilm and indexed obituaries from these papers. The index at a minimum contains the first and last name of the individual and the date published. To receive a digital and/or paper copy of the original notice from microfilm, a $5 pull fee is charged. To request the copy, send an email to reference@cclsys.org with the name and date published, or mail your request to Cambria County Library, 248 Main Street, Johnstown, PA 15901, Attn: Reference.
Available Indexes
1893-1905
These indexes were compiled by volunteer Shelby McHenry. It is the property of the Cambria County Library and cannot be downloaded or reproduced elsewhere without the library’s written permission.
Pennsylvania did not record deaths on a state-wide level until 1906. Prior to 1906 Cambria County recorded deaths on the county level from 1893-1905. Those records have been microfilmed. They are contained on two reels:
#1293475 contains volume 1 and covers the years 1893-1895 (the first half of this film has delayed birth records so you must scroll to the second half)
#1293476 contains volumes 2 & 3 covering the years 1895-1905
The indexes reference them and includes the date of death, name of the deceased, “color”, sex, age, name of father, name of mother, married or single, cause of death, and place of interment. The full record also includes the following: place of birth, occupation, place of death, duration of last illness, date of interment, and date of record.
Indexing handwritten documents can be challenging, so some errors are to be expected. Please also note that green indicates a difference in spelling of the surname.
The actual records can be viewed on microfilm in the library (or a digital/paper copy pulled by a reference librarian for a $5 fee).
